Please take a look at the posting on my blog. I have added the files necessary to get d-rats_repeater running from boot and in the background. Given you are running it on an Ubuntu box, you will need to modify the init.d startup script. If I find time in the next week or so, I will look to add the appropriate changes to the script.

Can I just copy the repeater.config file from another linux station where I launched the repeater and put it on the headless box, then point d-rats_repeater at it with the --config= option? Is there any documentation on what the options are for repeater.config?
