[chirp_users] New chirp-next build

Hi David,
There is only one screenreader for the GUI in Linux, that is orca.
So you can try running just orca
and if it isn't there, you can do the equivalent of:
sudo apt install orca
for your flavor of Linux.
Make sure you don't use the mouse, otherwise it won't be a test of accessibility.

Hi Glenn,

Have you tried running chirp-next on Ubuntu? Or tried running it straight from the git repo? I don't use a screen reader, but I was able to run chirp directly from the latest branch in the git repo just fine, and without flatpack .

Which screen reader do you use on TV Ubuntu? I could try testing it

  Hi,
Excuse me, but I prefer windows 7, although I got a new computer, and bought a key for 7, installed 10, and then put 7 in a VM, because I like it better, and if it gets infected, I have backups of the VM.
Now, on Chirp, since it went to having to use flatpak, Blind folks haven't been able to use it.
So if I want to use Chirp in Ubuntu, it's got to be Ubuntu using an old Python, and Chirp already installed.
And Chirp is so difficult in windows for people using a screenreader, I would guess that less than 5% of screenreader users have the screenreader skills to get around the lack of access to Chirp in windows.

Apologies ahead of time for the novel I've written below, but I have thoughts on all this, coming from a background working in fields that pertain to this whole Win 7/Win 10, old Chirp/new Chirp dilemma. Feel free to skip if you don't care!

If someone has, for whatever reason, stuck with Windows 7 up until this point, what makes us think they're going to be able to run a virtual machine, much less one with a Linux install on it, even if it is Ubuntu? Not just from a technical ability standpoint, what makes us think their hardware can support running multiple OSes, especially when one of them is Windows? That's not a lightweight ask, especially on DDR3 RAM and spinning-platter HDDs.

Also, if they're going to go through all the rigamarole of setting up a VM, why are we bothering with the old version of Ubuntu and Chirp? Use the latest Ubuntu and get new or old Chirp on there!

Here's an alternative: if someone is interested in using their old hardware and the newer version of Chirp, and they're limited from upgrading either their hardware or their OS, it could be a good idea to just install Linux. Mint XFCE would be a solid distro for stability and compatibility on older, outdated hardware, it's free, and let's be real, if they're into HAM, they're down with learning and tinkering, which is a perfect mentality to have going into learning Linux, even Mint/Ubuntu.

This is, of course, a good amount of work. Downloading and making installer media may be a challenge. Backing up data for use in the new OS. Installing Linux, even Mint, poses challenges to neophytes. But it is a lot more viable, and long-lasting, a solution than ad hoc-ing some bodge job of VMs and outdated OSes. And secure, too. Windows 7 machines should not be connected to anything that can reach the public Internet. Period. They're a massive security risk. This would resolve that, albeit with a goodly amount of work.

Just my... three cents on it. Too long an email for it to be just two lol.

Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

  Matt

Well if it is the only someone can use Chirp, either for accessibility, or because of operating system, I see nothing wrong with it.
I may DD my thumb drive with Ubuntu and Chirp on it, if I can find a drive with just that on it, and give a link to anyone who wants it.
Some of my thumb drives are multiboot, with several operating systems on it, so I'll need to go through a bunch of them to find one that has Ubuntu 18 and Chirp.

I can't imagine anyone here wants to be responsible for setting up, distributing, and supporting a VM image of what is now outdated and no longer supported software. I know I wouldn't want to be. There's a reason the software is outdated, the best solution is to keep up.

What would be handy is to have a VM of Ubuntu with the old Chirp already installed, so that can be implemented.
I am sure I have an old Ubuntu Live on a thumb drive with Chirp on it, but I don't know if that can be made into a VM.
