As far as I know, all firmware versions above BFB297 report as being BFB297
during the [6] + Power-On message. Using CHIRP, look at the Firmware
Message 1 on the Settings -> Other Settings menu to see the 'real' firmware
version. I'm sure you will find that each radio has a different firmware
version.

It is only the items on this menu (Other Settings) that do not get
transferred when there is a firmware version mismatch. This is also the
menu that you would use to edit the 'power up' messages.
