dstar voice rate is about 4.8 k baud, data rate is about 1.1 k baud. I don’t know what you mean by Leaving out voice does not make more data space available, so transmit times will be the same because I could say one word and sent 2 minutes of data I think. As far as I know data and voice can exist is some form at the same time.

How does it work?
In Digital Voice (DV) mode, a D-Star transceiver employs circuitry that converts voice audio, using proprietary AMBE encoding, to data packets. The packets are transmitted at a rate of 4800 bps, with 3600 bps used for voice and error correction. The remaining 1200 bps are used for synchronization and general use, of which 900 bps are available for transmitting slow-speed text.

I think the above is accurate,

The D-Star data stream has pre-defined voice and data portions. Leaving out voice does not make more data space available, so transmit times will be the same.
The voice and data portions of the available bandwidth are roughly equal.

Don,
I am not sure if the following is what you are asking but you can send files using dstar and at the same time as you are talking if you wish. We have done that several times. What I don’t know is if the file takes longer than when one is talking what happens. I assume the repeater stays up unless timed out but the person on the other end wound not hear any voice but should have some indication that the repeater was still busy. If you were using dstar simplex then timing out would of course not be a problem.
The dstar voice occupies about 6k bw and d-rats about 1.1 k BW and they coexist by some protocol which I don’t know.
I hope this helps some. We have a dstar repeater on 25B usually but we can put it on any node so if you want to try some file transfers using rf dstar and coupled via the internet I would be glad to run some experiments on reflector 15C which is a data reflector. I can change our dstar repeater to reflector 15C anytime so if anyone wants to work via reflector 15C rf I would be glad to give it a try.

1) Can D-RATS use a D-STAR RF link and Files to transfer files via the DRATS ftp? One pdf I read said that the D-STAR RF link only works for Chat and QST.
2) Is there an iPad version of D-RATS?
