You won't be able to ping me for several reasons:

1. I expect your radio is not set to route to me
2. My radio is definitely not set to route to you
3. My radio is off :)

You'll need to find someone within simplex range, on your local
repeater, or across the gateway to talk to.  In the latter case, some
coordination is likely to be necessary to get the remote station to
respond to you.
