Thanks for reposting this so clearly. It is unfortunate that our "reflex" seems to be to skip that first step.

I do something similar:
TH-D72A as found 20200320
then
TH-D72A HAM NOAA 20200327a
TH-D72A HAM NOAA FRS GMRS MURS SL 20200327a
TH-D72A HAM NOAA FRS GMRS MURS SL 20200327b

so that the saved file shows the content of the configuration. That way I can have several. I will often sit down and create different configs on the same day, so I change the "HAM NOAA" part to show that.
TH-D72A GOTR2020 20200327a (to support a local event)
I use "20200327a" > "20200327b" when I update a config the same day, and want to keep track of the changes. That way, if I screw up, I can go back and start over, but don't have to reload the whole radio.
