Live mode means that, as you edit fields in Chirp, the edited field is immediately, in real time, sent to the radio. If you move the tuning knob on the radio, that change will immediately appesar in Chirp.
One result of this is that there is no image file from the radio to save as a .img file and exporting to a csv is the only way to save your edits.
CSV files that "Chirp messes up" were usually messed up by Microsoft Excel, not by Chirp. Excel doesn't like empty cells ans can put dummy characters in them. Safer to use Libre Office or Open Office.
