I'll chime in here that counterfeit Prolific USB to serial devices 
*usually* just work in Linux.  I have seen a few times where one of two 
of the cables I have just seem to stop working but if I completely 
unplug both sides of the cable, wait 10 seconds, and re-connect boths 
sides, this usually resolves the issue.
