[chirp_users] Problem with Lexien 898S

Three responses to three comments.

As a programmer in a past life (I’m retired now) I can quite agree that people who don’t give any information except “It doesn’t work” are a pain in the touchas – definitely agree with you first response! “CHIRP doesn’t work for me.” really doesn’t work for me.

I also agree with this, surprise! But this also leads me to my third response, “empty questions” don’t necessarily mean that the person hasn’t looked, it may also mean that they’re so inexperienced that they don’t really know what they’re looking for. That BTW was me a few months back trying to help a friend install CHIRP on his Linux box … one (or was it several) people essentially walked me through solving his problem. We’re hams for somebodies sake, isn’t it part of the history of hams to be helpful??

I’m a novice when it comes to current radios, spent most of my younger life cussing Morse and playing with tube type receivers as an SWLer so I don’t often respond here unless I’m pretty certain that my response is usable.

As you suggest, there’s a lot of QRM here, wouldn’t it be more useful to all our sanities <??> if we provided helpful – really helpful – responses??

And I’ve added my share of QRM for the day …. Have a good one!

If someone doesn't state what they're using, be it operating system or radio, they're unlikely to get useful advice.

Instructions on fixing Windows and Mac device drivers are posted almost every day.

Empty questions about very common problems get boring and just show that the person asking the question, in all probability, just can't be bothered to research the problem and wants someone else to fix it.

Nigel your one liners would be a lot more helpful if you’d at least give a web site that they could go look at or an explanation about why Windows might have “screwed the device drivers”.

As it stands, from that message you don’t even really know he’s on windows – he (or she) could be running Linux or Max or …

I’m not intending to start a flame war and I’ll drop out if this is to offensive but it’s irritating and if someone doesn’t say something …

Probably Windows screwed up the device drivers.

Hi, I got an 898S early last year. It did come with a programming cable but I ordered one off of ebay. I received it, plugged it in and it worked. Next time I tried it I had to plug it in a couple of times before it would recognize it (I did get it to work). Fast forward to Dec I've plugged in numerous time and will not recognize radio. Obviously its either cable or maybe in the radio. How to I tell which? without buying a new cable. 73 Alan
