I (again) installed what appears to be the universal driver(for Mac OSX) from the site mentioned below and kextstat says:

  157 0 0xffffff7f80e07000 0x6000 0x6000 com.prolific.driver.PL2303 (1.6.0) F6A6805D-685D-3E6D-BF81-106EBBC0A386 <126 51 5 4 3>

Still no luck.

So, I was already running this driver, or I need to do something else to have it use this driver, or…? Also the FTDI site shows 2 different types of drivers are available, the one I used and this one (D2XX1.4.4). What I find interesting is the one direction from the radio works flawlessly and te other direction (to the radio) fails after it is theoretically 3/4 done. Usually drivers fail in more definitive ways but clearly others are able to use Chirp bi-directionally with the VX-5R. By the way, for what it is worth, I have no trouble with upload and download to a Btech UV-5R. Of course that it is a different cable.
