Not necessarily true.  I have recovered radios that look like they are bricked but are still able to communicate over basic communication if you have the right ability to monitor them.

If you tell Powerwerx that you are using CHIRP they will tell you it will brick the radio.

Powerwerx is a retail vendor that markets the RT Systems software and cable as part of their product line. It would not be in their best interest to recommend CHIRP.
I'm sure it's strictly a business decision.
