UTM, or Universal Transverse Mercator, has been in wide use by the military for many years.  Of late, it has been largely supplanted by the Military Grid Reference System, which retains the same grid system, but uses naming conventions that are much more user friendly.  NATO uses both, but MGRS is far more prevalent, and will eventually completely replace UTM.
