The data port of a KT8900D/KT7900D is on the back of the radio next to
the external speaker port. So it is easy to plug the programming cable
into the wrong port.

Also if the programming cable has a counterfeit Prolific USB-to-Serial
chip (most under $20 cables and those shipped "free" with a radio) and
is used with Windows, then you must roll the Prolific driver version
back to v3.2.0.0 (the latest drivers are designed to be incompatible
with unauthorized chip copies).
