Wenlock,

My CHIRP daily-20151023 works fine in the Ubuntu 14.4LTS virtual
machine that I created.

Did you install CHIRP daily-20151023 from the PPA as instructed on the
CHIRP download page (see "Ubuntu Linux Users")? That will get you the
latest version of CHIRP (the same version that you most likely
downloaded and installed for "Windows").

Or did you install CHIRP v0.3.1 (released back in April of 2013) from
the Ubuntu Software Center?
