I teach a class using GSM modems with a built-in USB connector that has a serial device emulator. The original batch I bought comes up as /dev/ttyUSB0. This year, due to increased class sizes, we bought some more, They are using a new TI Chip for the USB-serial bridge, and this comes up as /dev/ttyACM0.

Look out for it in case that is what you have. I am using SuSE linux 13.2

In each case it appears it does not find, or allow me access to, the Com Port ttyS0, or any port for that matter. Probably something simple I do not know about being new to Linux. Can anyone please give me some advice? Thanks
