The MAX232 method is likely gonna be picky as heck unless there's a
constant power source available. You can use the DTR line on the serial
port but on some systems this isn't driven with enough current.
That being said, this is what I've used.
I just tossed a 2N2222 and 2N3904 in there as the PNP and NPN transistors.
Never fails.
