Thank you to all who replied to my post.  I got it programmed.  However, at the end of the upload, I got an error message.  In case the image doesn't come through in the post, the text  is:
========================================================

An error has occurred

Upload finished but the 'Other Settings' could not be sent because the firmware version of the image BFB307 BFB297) does not match that of the radio BFS311 BFB297 ).

Can the firmware of the UV5R be flashed or, does the difference in versions not really matter?
=========================================================

It probably already is. It looks like another UV-5R variant so try the
UV-5R selection.

Yes, the firmware in the BF-997S is  BFS297.
This can be confirmed by Pressing the 3 KEY on the keypad while doing a PowerOn.
Internally it is a UV5R. http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/images/UV5R-Family.jpg

CHIRP supports over 60 various models.
Do a Download from Radio to create an initial template.
Make the changes and additions, then Upload to Radio.

Enjoy your new toy.

Hi,  I am new to Chrip, and am loving how easy it is to program using
this great software.   However I am having a problem when using it with
my Kenwood TH-K2AT.   (I am having great results when using it with

The TH-K2 has 100 memory channels, or 50 if you use  alpha tags.  I
don't use the alpha tags, and have almost all 100 memories full. Here is
my problem:  when reading from the radio, Chirp will only read the first
50 channels.   Any attempt to change the values in the "Memories Memory
Range" is immediately changed back to 50 channels.   There doesn't seem
to be any way to get Chirp to read all the channels.

I apologize if this has already been addressed.   I did a search on the
Chirp web site, as well as searching Google, and didn't find anything.

73,
Jim

The problem is that we don't have any way of probing from the computer
side whether or not the radio is in 50 or 100 channel mode. On another
Kenwood radio that had similar behavior, I tried various methods of
trying to guess based on the contents of the memories, but it was pretty
much always wrong for someone and/or provided quirky user behavior.

I think it's infinitely more common to have your Alpha tags enabled
these days, so I think CHIRP taking that assumption is pretty
reasonable, in the absence of other options...
