There is much more to the store than Prolific like to reveal.
Irrespective of this, Dig about the internets (particularly on various
software sites) and you might find the earlier drivers and you can
over-ride Windows installing the newer driver over the top. I made up
a CD with a little installer that installed every variant of the
drivers I could locate and you could ensure whatever cable you used
you had the driver for the job. Sadly I never made a back up and I've
loaned it away and it has never returned :(
