Sounds like whatever configuration of Linux you put on that thumb
drive does not have persistent storage, or you didn't save to a
persistent partition. This is how the Chirp bootable CD is set up,
because it's a CD and not writable. When you created that bootable
thumb drive, maybe you accidentally configured it as a read-only
bootable CD.
