Mike,

CHIRP is compatible with all Firmware versions of the UV-5R.

You will needs to run the CHIRP Daily Build 20121013 or later.

I don't think that is true of all radios. There is nothing in the radio that precludes writing to it on hookup other than the
initial handshake.

I think no matter what radio you are programming you always need to download from the radio first.

I was able to successfully use the latest daily build on both my 251, and 291 versions of UV-5R. What you cannot do, is load one
radio, then go to the other radio, and load it. When you go to the other version, you need to download from the radio, the open the
file with all your saved info, and upload it to the new radio. In other words, download from the radio, even if you do not intend to
use the file, that seems to be what tells chirp what version radio you have.

Chirp will not work with BFB291. Go here and get software http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-Software.html

I read something about there being diffrent versions which require separate programming software.

I think it was on the Baeofeng USA website.

I have had success using both CHIRP and Baofeng software in downloading and uploading from a Baofeng UV-5R, Version BFB 251 120702
VER-05 which belongs to a mate.

However, my own model UV-5R, Version BFB 291 120828N B5R0001 does not respond. Any suggestions?

Regards,

Mike
