Echo in HyperTerminal is a setting:  File >> Properties >> Settings >> 
ASCII Setup >> "Echo characters typed locally".

Is there by chance a "null modem" adapter involved (which would switch 
the transmit/receive signals)?

Do you know the cable's pinout (for all intermediate cables)?
