One of the things that concerns me is that if the radio only supports 8 character calls then we could severely limit some of our club owned equipment or even the public safety agency owned equipment. Since you can't use the A, B, C, G, or R and I believe a couple of others too.

I could be wrong but, I know that certain letters are reserved for just the Clusters. Also, the limit in that you can't have a radio with the same call as a repeater. So we can't have any W5NGU radios since we have a W5NGU cluster.

I realize this is a slight degress off topic, but allow me to pull it back in by saying we could have a serious need for D-RATS to handle some kind of an SSID, especially a Tactical Call if that is at all possible.

Eric M.
If Icom does this, they will break the DSTAR specification from JARL which states those 4 octets are a comment, so a comment is its intended purpose. A couple of there features use the data payload to add functionality (e.g. group call squelch) and they might do it in a rational fashion, but it would be interesting to see what Icom is thinking.

Remember Icom doesn't own the DSTAR specification, they implement radios that use it and sometimes have their own interpretations or take liberties in design.

This isn't Icom slamming, it just how it works.

-- John - K7VE

On Tue, Sep 9, 2008 at 6:56 AM, Eric M.
