The checksum error isn't what you think it is.  It failed to open your
COM port early, so it obviously can't complete the send.  From your log:

> Serial exception on connect: could not open port COM5: (5, 'CreateFile', 'Access is denied.')
> Comm [SERIAL COM5 at 9600] did not connect: Unable to open serial port

In Windows, that usually means either (a) the COM port isn't really
there or (b) something else is using it.
