Well, it is a standard, and supports file attachments. Could make a
bit of sense, as that would allow 2 machines on the same LAN to be
linked, and you have text and file transfer capabilities. Wouldn't
push it past the LAN frontier, without beefing up security, unless
you want to be a conduit for D-RATS spam ;) I can certainly see that
SMTP fits well with Winlink. :)

Given the nature of D-RATS traffic, something designed for realtime
messaging might be worth investingsting, such as Jabber. A dedicated
Jabber network could be implemented on a global scale, and could be
restricted only to registered ham gateways (whether NBEMS, D-RATS or
something else). Might be a relatively secure way to link D-RATS
around the world too. Individual hams could be validated (a la
Echolink style) and allowed to connect directly to the Jabber server
as well. The system could support point to point links (via direct
private messaging), and nets (using a "chat room). And being open
source, if Jabber is "not quite right", a ham version could be
forked, or ham patches could be submitted for inclusion into the
source of the software we choose to use. :)

Just thinking out loud, and tossing ideas out there.
