Sounds like you've changed some association in GNOME or something.
The install procedure literally just lays down the repeater (et al)
apps on the disk.  It doesn't configure or change any sort of file
associations, and certainly doesn't touch firefox :)

Have you checked in the "preferred applications" tool in GNOME?
