Apologies ahead of time for the novel I've written below, but I
have thoughts on all this, coming from a background working in fields that
pertain to this whole Win 7/Win 10, old Chirp/new Chirp dilemma. Feel free to
skip if you don't care!

If someone has, for whatever reason, stuck with
Windows 7 up until this point, what makes us think they're going to be able to
run a virtual machine, much less one with a Linux install on it, even if it is
Ubuntu? Not just from a technical ability standpoint, what makes us think their
hardware can support running multiple OSes, especially when one of them is
Windows? That's not a lightweight ask, especially on DDR3 RAM and
spinning-platter HDDs.

Also, if they're going to go through all the
rigamarole of setting up a VM, why are we bothering with the old version of
Ubuntu and Chirp? Use the latest Ubuntu and get new or old Chirp on there!

Here's an alternative: if someone is interested in using their old
hardware and the newer version of Chirp, and they're limited from upgrading
either their hardware or their OS, it could be a good idea to just install
Linux. Mint XFCE would be a solid distro for stability and compatibility on
older, outdated hardware, it's free, and let's be real, if they're into HAM,
they're down with learning and tinkering, which is a perfect mentality to have
going into learning Linux, even Mint/Ubuntu.

This is, of course, a good
amount of work. Downloading and making installer media may be a challenge.
Backing up data for use in the new OS. Installing Linux, even Mint, poses
challenges to neophytes. But it is a lot more viable, and long-lasting, a
solution than ad hoc-ing some bodge job of VMs and outdated OSes. And secure,
too. Windows 7 machines should not be connected to anything that can reach the
public Internet. Period. They're a massive security risk. This would resolve
that, albeit with a goodly amount of work.

Just my... three cents on it.
Too long an email for it to be just two lol.

Anyway, thanks for coming
to my TED Talk.

Matt

Sent from Proton Mail mobile
--------
