Mint XFCE would be a solid distro for stability and compatibility on older, outdated hardware, it's free, and let's be real, if they're into HAM, they're down with learning and tinkering, which is a perfect mentality to have going into learning Linux, even Mint/Ubuntu. <br><br>This is, of course, a good amount of work. Downloading and making installer media may be a challenge. Backing up data for use in the new OS. Installing Linux, even Mint, poses challenges to neophytes. But it is a lot more viable, and long-lasting, a solution than ad hoc-ing some bodge job of VMs and outdated OSes. And secure, too. Windows 7 machines should not be connected to anything that can reach the public Internet. Period. They're a massive security risk. This would resolve that, albeit with a goodly amount of work. <br><br>Just my... three cents on it.
