That's not right John. You can hear FAX data if you know where to look, you can hear Packet Radio, and you can hear computer programs if you've still got a home computer from the 80's. They, and others, are all serial data and as you can hear them then they
must be in the audio spectrum. Closer to our homes as Radio Amateurs, even Morse Code is a form of serial data.

<div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Times New Roman",Times,serif; font-size: 12pt;">
Most of it can be controlled by a volume control as fitted to cassette players, CW receivers, and Packet Radio transmitters and receivers. If the volume control was turned down to zero, you wouldn't hear anything from any of them. Nor would the computer, the
TNC or the FAX machine. Which is all very well, but I'm inclined to believe the people who say that the data in/out connectors on hand-helds don't use the audio channels (speaker and microphone) because a) its an obvious way to ensure data coms reliability,
and b) its the way I would do it.

<div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Times New Roman",Times,serif; font-size: 12pt;">
But... The accountants would argue that the two extra terminals fitted to each of several million radio sets would amount to millions of yen in lost profit. So the early versions might be as designed by the engineers, i.e. two distinct interfaces (audio and
data) but the later versions might be made to the lower specification as defined by the accountants. I can therefore see a case where, if you've got a later version, you would need to adjust the volume control when programming the memories.

<div style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Times New Roman",Times,serif; font-size: 12pt;">
Two solutions: a) make sure your manual applies EXACTLY to the model you've got, especially if bought second-hand, and b) experiment. I'm sure other solutions are available from a variety of sources.

All,
Have been programming multiple (15+/-) UV-5's, for our group, for
several years. Never have had to mess with the volume. Versions of hardware
at the beginning was the worst. Cables and drivers, were a pain for a while
to, but not the radio controls.
The digital data is proviced on connections that have nothing to do
with the connections for the analog speaker audio or the analog
microphone audio. In addition to the audio wires (that aren't included
in the programming cable since they are not necessary to have for
programming) and the data wires, there is even a connection that
provides DC voltage (5V or 3.3V depending on the radio) to power
external devices.
Hi everyone,

You guys were incredibly helpful recently in getting me started. I've now successfully uploaded marine VHF, 2m and 70cm simplex channels to my Baofeng UV-5R III, thanks again.

I'm now having a few problems in adding repeaters and I hope you can similarly help.

I have a CHIRP file for relevant UK repeaters. I'm guessing that they are from an older version of CHIRP as some of the column headings are different.

I'm manually entering the info. All ok except these. The (old) file of repeaters shows these columns: Tone. rToneFreq. cToneFreq. DtcsCode. DtcsPolarity. Tstep

I'm trying to enter:-
Tone, always Tone
rToneFreq, either 110.9, 82.5 or 103.5.
cToneFreq, always 88.5
DtcsCode, always 23
DtcsPolarity, always NN

My version of CHIRP isn't quite the same. Here are my issues.

In CHIRP, I populate Tone Mode to Tone. My next 2 columns are Tone and Tone Sql. I seem only able to enter one of these columns as when I enter the second it automatically changes the previous Tone Mode to another preset. Simialrly, the Tone Mode autochanges
when I try to populate any of the DTCS Code, DTC Rx Code and Cross Mode.

Hopefully, I've explained the issue clearly. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks in advance

Kind regards

Hi David,

It appears that you may be looking at a CSV file. If it is a valid
CHIRP CSV file you should be able to "Import" it into a tab that is
compatible with your radio. An alternative would be to import file
into a "New" generic tab which would allow you to copy and paste the
rows into a tab that is compatible with your radio. Whichever is the
most convenient for you.

But to answer your question, the Tone column in your file is
equivalent to the Tone Mode column of the CHIRP spreadsheet style
memory editor. When Tone Mode is set to "Tone", only the Tone field is
used in the editor. The other fields (ToneSq, DTCS Code, DTCS Rx Code,
DTCS Pol and Cross Mode) are blank (when "Hide Unused Fields" is
enabled) and are currently unused/ignored by CHIRP. When you try to
put something on one of the "blank"(unused/ignored) fields, the CHIRP
"Smart Tone Modes" thinks you've changed your mind about and tries to
"guess" the correct Tone Mode based on the fields that you've just
entered a value into.

So back to your file. With the Tone column set to Tone, then only the
rToneFreq (Tone) is going to be used by CHIRP in the editor. The
cToneFreq (ToneSql), DtcsCode (DTCS Code) and DtcsPolarity (DTCS Pol)
fields will be ignored by CHIRP and should be ignored by you.

So once you set Tone Mode to Tone and entered the CTCSS frequency into
the Tone field, stop. The remaining fields pertaining to selective
squelch should remain blank.

You might take a look at the column guides linked to here for more information:
Many thanks, Jim,
That was a clear and fully comprehensive response, much appreciated.
I opened a new file and imported the .CSV file(s) successfully. This confirmed which columns to populate on my saved radio file. A minor edit was all that was required. Also, it uploaded to radio successfully.

Hi,
Has anyone had an issue with Baofeng 888 items on the settings tab (not
memories) not being saved on upload?

I am primarily trying to disable voice prompts, however after editing
the downloaded image and uploading it, the next time I download it, the
setting has reverted (or was never saved).

Editing the hex in the browser produces the same result. Does anyone
know the significance of the red highlighted values?

Chirp version is CHIRP daily-20190412 and I see nothing in the change
log since then related to the BF888.

One thing I notice is that the progress bar on upload moves very quickly
after about half way, whereas the download is at a steady rate, which
makes me wonder if it skips part of the upload.

Cable is a marked up as Baofeng and is regularly used with the UV5R
without problems.

OS is Mageia Linux using our official package which is maintained by me.

Any ideas welcome.

Cheers,
Barry
Have been programming multiple (15+/-) UV-5's, for our group, for
several years. Never have had to mess with the volume. Versions of hardware
at the beginning was the worst. Cables and drivers, were a pain for a while
The digital data is proviced on connections that have nothing to do
with the connections for the analog speaker audio or the analog
microphone audio. In addition to the audio wires (that aren't included
in the programming cable since they are not necessary to have for
programming) and the data wires, there is even a connection that
provides DC voltage (5V or 3.3V depending on the radio) to power
external devices.
Data uses the same connector. It doesn't go through the radio's audio chain. Audio is disabled when in program mode.
The data is serial data, which is not in the audio spectrum. There's no
come out of the back of an older PC. Volume has nothing to do with it, as
it's either "on" or "off."

You might take a look at the column guides linked to here for more information:
http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_CHIRP.php#guides

Cheers,
Barry
Just bought a Yaesu ft-2dr. I thought I purchased a programming cable.
I grabbed a cloning cable instead.

Which cable is the correct to use?

Main programming computer is a debian (linux) laptop.

Thanks
Jeff,
Instead of using the Baofeng software, use Chirp which is the program this list is designed for. Go to:
https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download and choose the version for the operating system used on your computer. Read thru the info on the Chirp website that will help you
use the program and also check out http://www.miklor.com/ which supports Chirp use and has lots of good info. I have used Chirp to program the UV-5R, UV-82C, and UV-82HP. In fact just this weekend programmed 15 of the
UV-82C's. Had to do some wiggling of the connector on a couple to get them to communicate. It has to be fully seated and make good contact in the sockets. There is an article and picture on the Miklor site about having to trim a little on some programming
cables to get that to happen. Welcome to the list and have fun!
All,
Have been programming multiple (15+/-) UV-5's, for our group, for
several years.
Data uses the same connector. It doesn't go through the radio's audio chain. Audio is disabled when in program mode.
The data is serial data, which is not in the audio spectrum. There's no
"modem" on either end of the cable. It's straight RS-232C data as might
come out of the back of an older PC. Volume has nothing to do with it, as
it's either "on" or "off."

Kind regards

Hi,
Has anyone had an issue with Baofeng 888 items on the settings tab (not
memories) not being saved on upload?

Cheers,
Barry
Which cable is the correct to use?
Report this to Debian, it looks like a packaging issue, assuming that
you are using a Debian package.

I think you are probably missing libxml2-python
Hi Jeff,

The problem isn't the software. You don't have a correctly installed
programming cable. No programming will (or can) work until you do.
I think that Debian call that package python-libxml2 (I'm not a Debian
user).
Hi Barry,

A change in the firmware of the BF-888S has resulted in the contents of the settings tab not being correctly saved to the radio. (It also resulted in the voice prompt language changing to Chinese on the newer radios I programmed.)

The work around is to change these settings manually on the radio as follows:

* On channel 10, Press and Hold the PTT and MONI buttons while switching ON the transceiver to activate/deactivate Voice Prompts.

* On channel 15, Press and Hold the PTT and MONI buttons while switching ON the transceiver to change Voice Prompt Language
Hi,
Has anyone had an issue with Baofeng 888 items on the settings tab (not
memories) not being saved on upload?

I am primarily trying to disable voice prompts, however after editing
the downloaded image and uploading it, the next time I download it, the
setting has reverted (or was never saved).
