Thank you! Got it working. I used an earlier version also reset the radio. <br>
The strange thing is -on one of the radios, after downloading from radio, the "settings" tab is completely blank. The other one still has all the settings in the tab.<br>

Quit CHIRP<br>

Open MCP-1A<br>

Select Read>All<br>
Reading the data from the transceiver, and data is displayed in window<br>
Select File>Open - choose "test" mcp file. Full programming data is<br>
displayed<br>
Select Write>all<br>
Popup asks "Do you want to write the data to the transceiver?" Select Yes<br>
Writing the data to the transceiver, and radio is programmed with contents<br>
of "test" mcp file<br>

So the problem does not seem to be with the cable or the radio, since<br>
MCP-1A can talk to the radio.<br>

This is because one or more of the settings has an out-of-range value.<br>
The debug.log file should give you a clue as to which settings have<br>
this issue.<br>
<br>
If you would like, you could email your "image" file to me. I should<br>
be able to locate the misbehaving setting(s) and return the image with<br>
valid values.<br>

Mine works fine under Linux using the Kenwood supplied cable and generic USB/serial adaptor but remember that that radio programmes in real time/live mode so you can't download and save an image. It re-saves every change you make in real time.<br>

Did you verify in Device Manager that the cable is actually Comm 3? Did you press firmly on the cable when plugging into the radio?<br>
