Because the programming cable is manufactured with a USB-to-Serial<br>
chip that, when used with a compatible device driver, creates a<br>
virtual COM port. This is necessary because virtually all radios<br>
programmed by CHIRP use serial communications and it is rare to see a<br>
modern computer with a legacy serial port.<br>
