Removing the antenna is bad advice. Most failure modes with the<br>
programming cable result in the radio transmitting. For example...<br>
<br>
- connecting the USB programming cable to a powered on radio prior to<br>
the driver being fully loaded.<br>
- connecting the USB programming cable to a powered on radio with an<br>
incompatible driver loaded.<br>
- powering OFF the computer with USB programming cable connected to<br>
the computer and to a powered on radio.<br>
- unplugging the USB programming cable from the computer while still<br>
connected to a powered on radio.<br>

So do not remove the antenna without replacing it with a dummy load.<br>
<br>
A solution that doesn't require removal of the antenna would be to<br>
tune to a VFO frequency or select MR channel that has no signals<br>
present. Adding a receive DCS code or receive CTCSS tone may also be<br>
worthwhile. If you create a channel just for this purpose, you could<br>
call it "PROG" or something similar and select it before powering OFF<br>
the radio to attach the programming cable.<br>
