<p>Hello John, Chris here, a G4 for quite some time!</p>
<p>What you and everybody else with data communications problems between their computers and their radios are missing is a USB interface. This business of having to use exactly the right cable, exactly the right driver from the dim and distant past, and in
some cases having to modify the shape of either the radio or the data lead to make them fit, is an absolute nonsense and has been for many years. I read the emails to chirp-users and I would guess that at least 70% of them concern problems with data transfer.</p>
<p>I will not be buying another radio with a data interface unless it is to the world-wide standard for USB, including both hardware and software. In this respect it is high time that the manufacturers of radio equipment dragged themselves into the 21st Century.<br>
</p>
<p>I am not a fan of Bill Gates because of the damage he has done to computing as a whole over the last 40 years, but apart from the name, at least he got the USB interface right. I mean, fancy calling a digital communications interface 'Upper Side Band'!</p>

UTM, or Universal Transverse Mercator, has been in wide use by the military for many years. Of late, it has been largely supplanted by the Military Grid Reference System, which retains the same grid system, but uses naming conventions that are much more user
friendly. NATO uses both, but MGRS is far more prevalent, and will eventually completely replace UTM.<br>

UTM was invented by the military and has been adopted by ground search teams<br>
worldwide, based on the ability to go to a 1M square. Air and Sea SAR still<br>
use LAT LONG due to the larger scale operations and areas. I specifically<br>
am in the states.<br>

I am possibly in wrong forum.<br>

I am a ham radio operator (call sign OK1RR) for 50 years, active <br>
primarily on CW (Morse Telegraphy). Now I should be a new owner of a <br>
Kenwood VHF/UHF Transceiver which I plan to use for talking to local <br>
friends, possibly using a repeater. Also, frequencies outside of Ham <br>
Radio bands are out of scope. Anyway, local roundups are quite marginal <br>
for me, my hobby is and will remain Morse Telegraphy and contacts to <br>
rare remote places (for hams who knows what 'country', 'DXCC' means - I <br>
have 345 DXCC countries confirmed).<br>

Anyway, Lat/Long is for me not a problem. I wanted to say that for ham <br>
radio operators in Europe is more convenient to use the WW Locator...<br>
<br>
My apologies to freaks of Search and Rescue services, military etc. I am <br>
not keen of these things and never will be due to lack of interest.<br>

After multiple failures with the Mac, I decides to use my work Windows<br>
laptop. Got everything setup and working. However when I upload from the<br>
radio the spread sheet is empty. The radio indicates it is "waiting" and<br>
beeps when it is done, but there is nothing on the spread sheet. I tried<br>
uploading to the radio and that did not work either. It appears if the data<br>
rate and/or the connection is not correct. What I am missing?<br>

You must "download" from the radio to CHIRP first.<br>

Also, if you programming cable has a counterfeit Prolific<br>
USB-to-Serial chip, then you must download, install and select the<br>
older Prolific v3.2.0.0 device driver because the one that is<br>
automatically installed by Windows is intentionally incompatible.<br>
