I'm not a Mac user, but I am aware that their OS is BSD based, not Linux.

Many of the command line tools are common as they are both "UNIX like".  
But there are some significant differences in the behaviour of some, and 
how they interact.

As they say...   The Devil is in the Detail.   BSD is "more UNIX like" 
(I think is the phrase) than Linux.
