So, the answer to the question seems to be: "there's not any documented
cases of CHIRP bricking a YAESU radio". Lots of speculation, concern, etc.
but nothing actually concrete.

Your money, your paranoia. 

RT gets expensive when you've got several different radios. 

It's twice the price of a cheap radio.
