[chirp_users] chirp connecting to UV-5R from Ubuntu 16.04 on Lenovo Carbon X1

I'm trying to connect to a UV-5R using a USB cable that was bought some
time (maybe 5-10 years) ago, using chirpw on ubuntu 16.04.

The tty port is found when I plug it in:
$ dmesg | grep tty
[ 7527.188154] usb 1-2: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[ 7548.490452] pl2303 ttyUSB0: pl2303 converter now disconnected from
ttyUSB0

$ la /dev/ttyU*
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 Feb 17 13:49 /dev/ttyUSB0

When I start chirpw and try to download from radio, the error is not
consistent, it depends on whether I've tried it before or not. Sometimes I
get the error:
[Errno 16] could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0:
[Errno 16] Device or resource busy: '/dev/ttyUSB0'

and /dev/ttyUSB0 disappears.

Another time after I unplugged and replugged the USB cable and restarted
chirpw, /dev/ttyUSB0 reappears and when I try to download from radio I get:
[Errno 5] could not open port /dev/ttyUSB0:
[Errno 5] Input/output error: '/dev/ttyUSB0'

Any advice on how to troubleshoot this?
