Hi Phillip
If you’re not seeing your cable in chirp you don’t have the correct driver for your cable installed.
If you know the chip set in the cable search out the driver for it .
I use chirp on my old iMac running lion OS and that’s old by today’s standard.
Of course you are probably aware of the problem with prolific fake chips sets and to some 
Degree ftdi but as you said you have good quality cable. Try checking in the system profiler 
to see if the cable shows up there to get some info of its manufacturer.
