On some boards RxD and TxD means "to RxD" and "to TxD" on the other end.

On other boards RxD and TxD means "I am RxD, hook me up to TxD on the
other end" and "I am TxD, hook me up to RxD on the other end".

To make matters worse, some of the pinouts seen floating around on the
Internet have the same issue. So if the first try doesn't work, swap
the RxD and TxD on one end and try again, as you've already figured
out.

Glad you have it working.
