Thank you. Downloaded the 0161018 version and received the message, "An error occurred Radio did not respond". 
Somewhere there was a suggestion that the programming cable might need  some surgery ! At this point I don't feel brave enough :-)

You might try an earlier version. I have several of the 5RTP, and I have used CHIRP for about a year with them. I am currently running 20161018, and it works fine. I'd say even just backing up one rev should work for you.
