I would suggest you find a local Amateur Radio Club. They probably will offer classes that would teach you the basic theories and legal aspects of using these radios. That way we can stay 'on topic'. Either buy a cb or a scanner to listen, if you wish.

Lower frequencies are not only AM. Very few frequencies are xclusively AM.

No. These radios cover 130-174 MHz and 400-520 MHz and RX/TX FM only.
CB is 26-27 MHz and RX/TX AM and SSB only.
