I just changed the setting of the side key using CHIRP and then read
the radio using the factory software to confirm that the side key
value was properly set. It was.

Also after setting the side key function to Transmit Power, it is
evident that the factory default Monitor setting is no longer
available. Pressing the the side key now either causes the radio to
emit 1 beep or 2 beeps. I assume the beeps tell the user what the
power level was just switched to.

I've checked this on 2 BF-888S radios.

Thanks for the feedback Tom/Jim.
Checked mine out again and my error is repeatable. Setting the side Key to Transmit Power just switches it off - no beeps, nothing. Perhaps I should just be grateful that I can actually change the power settings in the tabular memories screen. Too much to hope that there is a serial number on these handsets but they have a small white sticker with the number 8.
