Linux has open source drivers build in so it should just work no
matter what. You do have to put the user in the "dialout" group or run
a "root".

To avoid problems with Windows and Mac, get a programming cable with
the FTDI USB-to-TTL chip. That way you can run the latest signed
driver from the chip manufacturer.
