I remember Motorola labeling the switch "PL" for Private Line on the HT220's.  I don't remember them saying that nobody else could hear your transmission.  Back then, Motorola used Voice Inversion for scrambling, that’s as much privacy as you could get.  Now we have digital.  That stops scanners dead.

I am also upset that FRS & GMRS radio manufactures actually market their radios as having "50 channels", when there are only 14 FRS & 7 maybe 8 GMRS channels.  What they do for the "other channels" is add CTCSS or DCS tones to make them appear to be its own channel.  Very bad on the part of the manufactures!

So, unless you're using a digital system or a system with encryption, there is no "secure/private" communications in the analog world.

Jim, I'm sure you will agree with me that the marketing department in Motorola (who (if I'm not mistaken) first called them "Privacy Tones") must have known that they were blatantly misleading people, where as most other companies call them by the anachronism CTCSS correctly.
