Is there a version of chirp going to work with the kg uv920p mobile radio
yet?

If you are using Windows and your programming cable claims to have a
Prolific chip in it , downgrade the driver to v3.2.0.0.0 and you should be
good.

I noticed that too at first. Try turning off the radio, plug the cable
into the radio, then turn it on. The radio may also be affected by whether
the USB cable is set up properly, with a driver, etc.

Also, the driver on this site works for me using the 2303 Prolific chip
with a very cheap cable from Amazon ($4.70 shipped).

http://www.409shop.com/409shop_product.php?id=103760

This site is actually suggested in the CHIRP user manual that is on line.
I have not tried the driver on the miklor site.

One key thing for the driver at the 409 shop. You run the driver installer
then restart the computer. Then you can see the cable being recognized in
the Device Manager and see which port it is using. It was on COM5 for me.
You then set COM5 in CHIRP.

Rather than fuss with the driver, I have two solutions:

1. Plug the radio in while turned off, ready Chirp for whatever operation,
turn the radio on and click the OK button on Chirp as soon as the version
string shows up in the radio display.

2. Program a non-transmit channel (I have local NOAA weather in
channel 1), tune to that channel before plugging in, and no further issues.

By the way, the provided earpiece also likes this procedure. When I first
plugged it in, the radio did strange things and I could not hear anything
in the earpiece. If I plug the earpiece in and THEN turn the radio on, it
works fine.

To answer my own question from earlier today, I accidentally found the
Settings tab. After you set up the radio and save a set of repeater sites,
the Settings tab seems to be available to configure the radio.

When entering my one and only repeater frequency, offset, TX, RX, etc., the
language changed from English to Chinese. How do I change it back to
English? Can't seem to find the commands in the booklet. Radio receives
and transmits fine.

It is under menu 14. There is an English/Chinese/None choice that is not
shown in the manual.

There is a better manual at this site: http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/

Subject: [chirp_users] Change language from Chinese to English-Baofeng UV-5R

When entering my one and only repeater frequency, offset, TX, RX, etc., the
language changed from English to Chinese. How do I change it back to
English? Can't seem to find the commands in the booklet. Radio receives
and transmits fine.

Mike,

You can change it manually by going into the menu and changing item 14,
VOICE. The procedure to change menu items is in the manual.

Mike,

It would seem that you used menu 40 to RESET your radio prior to adding
your repeater frequency. Menu 14 (VOICE) on the original UV-5R was either
ON or OFF. The default after a RESET is ON. A UV-5R with BFB251 firmware or
later, menu 14 has the choices of OFF, ENG (English) and CHI (Chinese). The
defalut after a reset is CHI.

Take a look at the "Reference for UV-5R Menus"
http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/ (scroll down to "Menu Definitions - Detailed")

So as others have already pointed out, you can use menu 14 to take care of
this using the radios's keypad. To do this using CHIRP you would download
from your radio, access the Settings->Advanced Settings menu and set Voice
to English and then upload the change back to your radio.

You should be using the driver at www.miklor.com whether you run XP or Win
7 / 8.
