When you have an older Prolific driver that is working and it suddenly
quits, usually something happened to cause Windows to automatically
download and install the latest driver. The original driver is still
installed. Usually it is a simple matter to go into device manager and
choose the old driver again. A guide is on the Miklor.com website.

But that doesn't help you because you want the FTDI cable to work instead.
