Amen to that, I have also found that to be true. I have the hassle that I
need to test new Chinese cables before I hand them out to be sure that they
actually work. And as you have observed, because of that, every time I plug
a new cable in to the same USB port I just unplugged on from, I have
constant struggles with having to set them up again all over again. Swap
cables often enough, and you soon run out of available com ports. Once I
get there, I can only get them to work after I have gone to device manager
and deleted the previous ones in the hidden items menu (I have not had to
use that registry edit yet, I just use the shortcut mentioned above).

Practice does make perfect as they say however, and it seems like now what
took me frustrating tens of minutes previously now can be done in a minute
or two. My recommendation, keep cleaning out your orphaned hidden devices
that have handcuffed your com ports.
