You might wander by the Chirp website and let them know that.   They have 
the UV-5RC on their list for future development because ONE user has 
repeatedly reported that Chirp crashes on this computer ever time he tries 
to read the data from his UV-5RC.  None of the developers has a UV-5RC so 
they have not been able to confirm the problem and, of course, no one 
bothers telling that that there really isn't any problem with that model.

Mine works fine with both Win7 Pro and Ubuntu 12.10

I have BFB-293 and a knock-off cable that came with the radio when I 
purchased it.
