I bought a CAT/USB cord thru e-Bay, installed the driver, hooked it up, booted CHIRP, followed your instructions, finagled a bit, and  VOILA!  There was the entire memory of my '817(ND) in front of my eyes.  By finagling I mean that I had to work with the "A" and "C" buttons on the radio to get the right sequence, but I managed to both download and upload the memory info.  The 50 meter channel change went smoothly, and I dived into the VHF/UHF part to clean it up and add new entries.  Boy, what fun!  This is the first time in 53 years of hamming that I have actually hooked a computer to a radio--and it worked!
