With Dan's feedback, I have developed a solution that allows sending 
patches created by git such that they import cleanly.  I started with 
the git-patch-to-hg-patch in the moz-git-tools repository [1] and made a 
couple of tweaks that allow my converted patch series to be sent with 
'git send-email'  If others are interested in using this method for 
sending patches, let me know and I will put these patches up somewhere.
